Kitchen

For my Monthly to Do List today, I'm going to attack "clutter magnets" in my kitchen. Do you have those places in your kitchen that seem to attract clutter? Sometimes I think my kitchen must be in a force field of clutter magnetism! The mail is piling up beside my stove, and I haven't seen the surface of my work table for a couple of weeks. Take a quick look around your kitchen. Do you have a spot that becomes a dumping ground for mail, permission slips, and recipes? Or, maybe you have a cute little basket that is overflowing with cell phone chargers, anonymous keys, and bills that need paid. Whatever your "clutter magnets" are, let's clear them out today. You'll be surprised how quickly you can do this, and how much peace you'll feel when it's done. Ready..set...attack! And may the force be with you.

For this week's Monthly To Do List I'm headed back to the kitchen. So much living takes place in the kitchen! I don't know about you, but I fight a constant battle against dishes, crumbs, and piles of mail. Yet, a clean and organized kitchen affects every other area of family life. Being able to make meals without having to clear off the counter saves me time that I could spend elsewhere. And being able to put the dishes away without having to play "Who-Can-Force-the-Drawer-Closed" saves my sanity. So, I'll be tackling several areas of my kitchen that call out to me every time I walk into the room. I might even take on some of those tasks that don't tend to scream for my attention, and are easily overlooked. And, as always, don't worry if we don't get the entire room in perfect condition. We'll be visiting this space again soon!

In the restaurant biz, the kitchen is called the "heart of the house." That's certainly true around our home, too. This room is used for cooking meals, giving spelling tests, listening to stories, and working out problems. And when the kitchen ain't clean, nothing feels clean. So this is the perfect room to jump into for today's Monthly To Do list. I'll quickly tackle the "clutter magnets" and return non-kitchen items to their rightful places. Then I'll take a look around to see what needs a little extra attention. Do the dishes need done? Are there things setting on the counters that could be put back in cupboards? How could I decorate this room a little better? Hmmm....I think I feel a list coming on!

Yesterday for my Monthly To Do task I was going to mop the kitchen floor, but the snowstorm didn't seem to care about my plans. Instead of following my original schedule, I ended up throwing together a quick grocery list and heading to the store. Along with everyone else in town. Then, after risking life and limb to have yummy snowed-in food, I didn't have much energy left for cleaning up the floor.

So...today I'm mopping my kitchen floor. I'll admit that I usually put this chore off until "later." Much, much later. Like, maybe tomorrow...next week...next month...in the spring sometime? Alright, so I'm not that bad, but I don't tend to get out the mop nearly as often as I should. Still, if I really think about it, mopping doesn't take very much time or effort. As a matter of fact, I bet that I could get it done in less time than it has taken me to complain about it here. Whether you use a mop and bucket, sponge and sink filled with water, or a "Swiffer" style mop, it will be nice to walk through the kitchen without your feet sticking. Squeak, squeak, squeak. Enjoy your clean kitchen!

For our Monthly To Do Task today, we're going to be washing our countertops. Since we already tackled our clutter magnets, this job should only take a few minutes.

Simply scoot over your canisters, small appliances, and cookbooks to wash underneath them. Then move them back and wash the rest of the counter.

It's amazing how much crumbs and dust end up behind everything. How on earth does it get there? Well, however it gets there, this is the day it goes away!
