My husband and I took years to come to a decision about homeschooling. We went back and forth over the issue, gave the public school system a try, and finally decided homeschooling was a good fit for our family.
Well, actually, we decided that maybe, possibly homeschooling would be a good fit for our family if we could find just the right philosophy and curriculum.
So, I began reading books on curriculum to purchase, curriculum to get for free, and curriculum to write yourself. It was overwhelming, to say the least, and it kept me chasing after every idea out there!
And then, I found the book So You’re Thinking About Homeschooling. It was exactly what we needed.
So You’re Thinking About Homeschooling shows how fifteen different families do homeschool. Now, the families aren’t actual families, but they’re fictional families based on composites of real-life homeschoolers. And these families fall on every different point of the spectrum. Instead of reading five different books passionately touting five different philosophies, I could read one book about fifteen different situations and philosophies, so we could decide for ourselves what would work best for our family.
This book shows families who do classical schooling, traditional schooling, and unschooling. There are families with special needs, families who travel, families with two working parents, and families with a stay-at-home mom or dad. And more!
One thing I love about So You’re Thinking About Homeschooling is that it shows how each homeschooling family is unique, and how each homeschooled kid is unique. There is no one-size fits all.
For the first time after our decision to look into homeschooling, I had hope that we could pull it off. I saw how different people structured their days and nurtured their children’s gifts. The stories showed me what homeschooling life looked like, and the resources section gave me the tools we needed to get started. I realized it was possible for nearly any loving parents to teach their kids at home.
Anytime I chat with someone who’s contemplating homeschooling, but isn’t sure if it’s for them or how they should go about it, this is the book I recommend. Unlike many homeschooling books, So You’re Thinking About Homeschooling doesn’t tell you that you should homeschool, or tell you the “one right way” to homeschool. It simply shows you the options in front of you and lets you decide which path to follow-up on. It’s the perfect place to start!
