31 day to {a better} ordinary :: day 6 ~ lessons and loveliness

While writing this 31 days to {a better} ordinary series, I've learned a couple of unexpected lessons:

1. Its amazing what problems you can solve when you don't have the luxury of avoiding them. I really did not want to write yesterday's post about "Running To Do Lists." Still, no matter how hard I tried to avoid it, I knew I just had to tackle that subject. Instead of giving up and not writing, or giving in and writing the same thing everyone else has written, I made myself face the running-list-problem and solve it. As a result, I discovered a solution that I've spent years trying to find. Feels good.

2. Nice tools matter. They aren't the only thing. They aren't even the most important thing. But they matter. I tend to be a make-do kind of girl. For example, I'll use an ugly calendar because it's free, but I'm enjoying using some of my new, prettier calendar pages. And do you know what? I don't think I've ever been more productive. I'm more likely to use something if it looks or feels good. That makes the small time or money investment worth it.

Those two lessons came together for me as I was trying to figure out why I just can't seem to keep up with filing the bills and papers that need taken care of. It's frustrating. I have a very simple filing system, yet I would rather let the papers pile up than grab out my expandable file and tuck them away.

It suddenly occurred to me that I hate that expandable file. It's cheap plastic and doesn't expand enough. I have to shove the pages in to make them fit, and then I have to practically sit on the thing to wrap the rubber band back around it. Who would enjoy that?

So, today I purchased a lovely little file for four dollars. Four. Dollars. I can't wait to get everything switched over. I want to use this tool. Big difference. Maybe now I can conquer this task that is constantly hanging over my head. I don't want piles of paperwork to be part of my ordinary. I want an organized ordinary. I want a pretty ordinary. I want {a better} ordinary.
