My Bitter Pride

May I have a glass of water, please? I seem to have something stuck in my throat. You see, I was just forced to swallow my pride. My kids wanted to have some friends over today. Great! Fine! No problem! Except……the bedrooms are rather messy, the kitchen table is piled with papers, and you can’t walk into the loft without risking your life. Deep breath. They’re just kids. They don’t care. And maybe they won’t tell their mothers that there are places in my home where you can’t see the carpet. Maybe they won’t write their names in the dust on the furniture. Maybe they won’t notice that I really, really need to vacuum. Maybe.

Then…..it happened. I simply told the kids to wash their hands. No big deal, right? But just as the girls were walking into the upstairs bathroom, I remembered. Oh, no! I didn’t clean that bathroom – since last week! A lot can happen to the kids’ bathroom if it doesn’t get a good cleaning for a week. Scary! Talk about a dose of humility. I’m afraid that’s a bitter pill I don’t usually choose to swallow. Too bad this blog isn’t called “Prideful Homemaking.” I can do that.

But, often, humility is what “gospel homemaking” is all about. It’s about laying aside what we want in order to serve others. It’s about facing who we really are, and our inability to do anything about that on our own. It’s about recognizing our own weaknesses…..and our desperate need for God’s grace. My dirty bathroom and messy house were exposed today. And so was my prideful heart and selfish desires. The gospel. Homemaking. They are both about humility. Both about the heart. Both about the cross.

So, I swallowed hard, confessed my sin, cleaned my bathroom, learned a lesson. All in a day’s work. I wonder what tomorrow will bring? Most likely, the need for another glass of water!
