I like To Do Lists. No surprise, right? I mean, just take a look at my sidebar or click on the Getting Started tab at the side of the page to see how much I like love my lists.
But every now and then I have a day when a To Do List just isn't enough. This happens to be a day like that for me. I'm having company this weekend, and that means I have lots of things I need to do. The things that must be done before I let anyone in the house have been added to my list for the week. The problem is that I also have many, many things I would like to do. From where I sit I can see at least twenty different things I would like to clean or organize in the next couple of days. If I begin listing everything, I'll probably break down in tears. Or run out of paper. Whichever comes first.
So, for today, I'm going to keep a "Done It List" instead of a To Do List. Each time I clean or organize something, I'll add it to my list. Writing down what I do will give me the motivation I need to keep going. By the end of the day I'll have a nice (long?) list showing my accomplishments, instead of a bloated To Do List reminding me of what I didn't get to.
I find that a "Done It List" is helpful at other times, too. When I'm having "one of those days" it helps me feel like I've done more than just put out fires all day. At those times, my list might include "unclogged toilet" and "scrubbed spilled spaghetti out of carpet." At the end of the day, when I'm surveying the destruction, it's encouraging to read through the list of things I did get done that day. It reminds me that I was busy caring for and serving my family, even if the house doesn't seem to show it.
I also like keeping a "Done It List" when my husband or kids are out of town for a couple of days. When I have the freedom to work at my own pace, instead of having to stop and fix dinner or teach a math lesson, I enjoy getting lots of things done. In that very rare free time, I don't want to have a list of things demanding my attention. Still, I like to see what I've accomplished, and it's always fun for me to read my "Done It List" to my husband when he comes home after a trip.
My "Done It List." It works for me! Check out more ideas over at Works For Me Wednesday.

This is a wonderful idea. Thanks for sharing. I’ve done something similar in the past, and I even kept those lists for a while to help cheer me up on what felt like unproductive days. I think I may have to do it again. (I called it a “success list.”)

I keep a running to do list…but I will add stuff that I’ve done so I can cross it off! LOL! I love crossing stuff off my list!

This is such a great idea! Really, I get to the end of the day and think I accomplished zippo. Then I really go over it and realize I did a LOT. Writing it down for myself would be an excellent source of encouragement.
PS–the photo with the big list is hilarious!
