Gospel homemaking? It may seem a little odd to hear those two words used together. Until a couple of years ago, I thought I understood what the word “gospel” meant. Just about any kid who grew up in a Christian home or a good church knows that it means “good news.” If you would have asked me for a little more information, I might even have quoted John 3:16 for you. The gospel is the “good news” that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, and if we accept Him, we will have eternal life. The end. Right?
Wrong. Well, not really wrong, just incomplete. My salvation is good news! But that is just the beginning of my need for God’s grace. I’m beginning to understand that the gospel…God’s grace…the cross is necessary for every part of my life. Every minute. Of every day. I have to admit that I still don’t completely “get it.” I wish my pride would just melt away and I would see myself for the sinner I really am. Then I could more easily see God for who He really is. Thankfully, God is patient and merciful. He is slowly emptying me of my ideas, and He’s filling me with His truths. I don’t always understand it. I don’t always believe it. I don’t always live it. But, little by little, I’m learning and growing.
So, why “Gospel Homemaking”? Because I’m a sinner. That is who I am. Even when I look sweet and kind and loving on the outside, I know that there is a war against sin going on in my heart. I can’t win that war. How do I know this? Because I try. Often. And I fail. Often. I NEED the gospel in order to love my family selflessly. I NEED God’s grace to joyfully care for my home. I NEED the cross in order to do the good works He has prepared for me. And when I do those good works by His grace, then I am a reflection of Christ to my little world.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:8-10)
God chose me before the foundation of the world. He saved me from the penalty of my sin. He’s transforming me into His likeness every day. For His glory. Now that’s good news!
